Project History

 
Former Pittsfield resident, Jim Shulman and his wife Jackie, wanted to give a gift to the Berkshires, a recognized area for natural beauty, art and history. More importantly they wanted to create an opportunity for all members of the community to participate in art and have pride in their community by all also giving back. Berkshire Carousel is about art and recreation, but more importantly about the inclusion of members of the entire community. The carousel construction would include beginners as well as talented artists and reflect the beauty, art and history of all of the Berkshires. Jim and Jackie agreed to financially back and lend direction to the project. The creation of the million dollar carousel would also rely on private donations and sponsorships. Work began on the carousel in May 2008 with carving lessons taught by a profession carver, Walter Ruess. By 2012 over 200 volunteers have participated in the project with an active volunteer base of 100 carvers, painters, tour guides, photographers and others participating at any given time.
